Business On Board: Nonprofit Board Training

Service on a nonprofit Board of Directors can be one of the most rewarding ways to contribute your skills and experience to make a positive impact on the community. Nonprofits working hard to improve our state face enormous challenges, so they seek energetic, talented and qualified leaders to achieve their missions. But first, it is critical that prospective board members first educate themselves on what it means to be a board member, including the fiduciary, legal and fundraising responsibilities of nonprofit board service.

Program Overview

Whether you are thinking about committing to board service or already serve on a board, this workshop will give you the tools you need to be effective in your role. Business On Board (BOB) is designed to teach professionals and community members what they need to know before joining a nonprofit board or to give a much-needed refresher to current board members and other organization leaders. Expert speakers provide attendees with critical knowledge about nonprofit board service, including:

An overview of nonprofits impact
The Fiduciary role of board members
The Legal Role of board members
The Fundraising Role of board members

How to Access Board Training

The program is offered in multiple formats depending on the audience:

Community Business On Board: These virtual workshops are open for anyone to attend.
Private Business On Board: Small, medium, or large nonprofits or businesses can opt to hold a private Business On Board; Boardroom Fundamentals training for their board members. These sessions can be tailored to include information about the organization’s volunteer or board service goals and objectives. We also offer a partial-day “refresher” or customized courses for organizations whose employees/board already have some nonprofit experience, but who want to learn new trends, current best practices and new tips for effective leadership.

Nonprofit Finance & Loan Navigator

The Finance & Loan Navigator program is FREE and available to any individual who feels they need to have a better understanding of both organizational nonprofit finances and the loan preparedness process. The program is aimed at C-suite and board members and is available on demand.

The program is set up as three modules: Financial Essentials, Financial Strategy and Loan Navigator. You will receive a Financial Navigator Guide and a Loan Navigator Guide to follow along with. This program helps break down the information so you can digest it and allows you to stop and start as needed.

Each module contains examples to follow along with, discussion guides that help you to apply the information and test your knowledge and provides suggestions for group discussions with colleagues. In addition to the guide, there are three short learning webinars, 10-15 minutes in length, paired with each module to lead you through the guide.

Once completed, your organization will receive a complimentary consultation. See below for more details.

Note: This resource is not designed for organizations that need money, but don’t have identified ways to pay it back. It is not designed for start-up organizations, though new organizations may find the information helpful in establishing good financial habits so that they are loan-ready in the future.

You will have perpetual access to the guides and videos in your member account, but only the individual(s) who went through the entire course can meet with the Navigator. To complete your course, complete the feedback form under “Completion Results” on your member account product page.

Arizona participants can receive a 1-hour complimentary consultation per organization with our Finance/Loan Navigator.
AZ Impact for Good members also receive 2 additional hours of consultation per organization EVERY year when they need it most.

After this initial consultation, you can schedule a time with our Navigator when you most need it as well.

Nonprofit Lifecycles

Using seven Lifecycle Stages to describe predictable growing pains nonprofits experience at each stage of organizational development, this workshop presents practical ways to think about and approach nonprofit capacity for your organization.

Program Overview

This workshop is based on the award-winning book, Nonprofit Lifecycles: Stage-based Wisdom for Nonprofit Capacity, and is ideal for executives and board members of nonprofits small and large, seasoned, or just-starting out.

In addition to learning about your organization’s capacity using the four “table legs” and developing your own Capacity Improvement Plan, you will work on a case study that reinforces the morning’s educational content, and receive a do-it-yourself diagnostic tool for assessing each organization’s own capacity.

Workshop Follow-Up Component

A week after the workshop, the attending nonprofit organization will be responsible for sending in their current Lifecycle Placement and Capacity Improvement plan (both short and long term). The majority of this information will be completed during the training.

Participants who complete the follow-up Capacity Improvement Plan, will be eligible for a minimum of 3 hours (up to 6 hours) of consultation* from a trained and experienced Nonprofit Lifecycle Consultant with the purpose of clarifying and providing direction on Capacity Improvement goals.

This consultation will need to be completed within 2-3 months after attending this workshop.

*Dependent upon number of registered organizations therefore consultation could include more hours.
